One popular ingredient in diet pills is Hoodia, believed to suppress the appetite. Unfortunately, from 20 varieties of Hoodia, only 1- Hoodia Gordonii is believed to contain the appetite suppressant.
With little published research on Hoodia it has been speculated that it tricks the brain into believing that the blood sugar levels are fine, and you are full. The drawbacks of this include that your normal warning signs of hunger and low blood-sugar are bypassed. This can be dangerous, even without considering the implications for diabetics.
In addition, genuine Hoodia Gordonii is quite rare, and the demand for it is high. As it takes 4-5 years for Hoodia to mature this has led to some companies decreasing the Hoodia content and bulking out their pills with filler.
There are many sellers and differing brands of hoodia, many of which are very expensive.
